DISCIPLINE/PROTECTION OF TEACHERS

Q. May a parent just come into a teacher’s room?
A. No. Article XVI.A, p.34, Article XI. L p.23.

Q. According to the contract, what are the teachers’ rights in dealing with a disruptive student?
A. XVIII., p.35
“Under the Policy of Pupil Behavior as it relates to marked deviation from good behavior, the teacher involved shall be consulted by the principal before the principal takes action hereunder, and the principal shall inform the teacher of the action taken. If the teacher believes such action to be inappropriate, the matter may be referred for review through the first three steps of the grievance procedure.

IF ASSAULTED BY A STUDENT:

 

Q. What must a teacher do when assaulted.

A. If necessary, seek medical assistance.

Administration should be informed.
The Administrator or security should notify the District Security Office.
If appropriate, have police notified. Call or have the BTF called – ASAP

In writing, or with witness present, request that the student be formally suspended and state that an affidavit will be provided ASAP.

Have injuries documented (Delegate Chairperson has camera).

Prepare statement including “I was assaulted by _____________ and request his/her formal suspension. I do not want _____________ returned to my class” (if so desired).

After reviewing it with BTF, submit notarized statement. (This can be notarized by a Commissioner of Deeds).

Complete District Accident/Incident Form. This will generate a Worker’s Comp. Claim.

Complete or have completed BTF Incident Report form and fax to BTF – 881-6678.

Notify BTF of any court dates.

Q. What happens to the student? Can the student return to the same class?
A. As per C. (4) p.36-37 (as follows)

“The pupil shall not be readmitted until the teacher has conferred with the principal or assistant principal involved. The pupil shall not be returned to the same class until the teacher and administrator have discussed the basis on which improvement can be expected. If it is mutually agreed that the pupil’s behavior cannot be expected to improve another placement will be provided.”

Q. What information are teachers entitled to receive regarding their pupils?
A. Student’s psychological, emotional and medical conditions and other information including guardianship. Article XI. O, p.23.
