BTF - Proposes District Work With BTF to Establish Standing “Teaching and Learning Environment Committee” & Answers Critics of Disruptive Student Survey

The Buffalo Teachers Federation today called on the Buffalo School District to work with the BTF to establish a standing “Teaching and Learning Environment Committee” to address the concerns raised in its Disruptive Student Survey.

The resolution was approved unanimously by the BTF Executive Committee and Council of Delegates (elected representatives from all schools) on February 8, 2018.

The BTF also released a rebuttal to some who attacked the survey for only having 1217 responses and as being a negative reflection on poor and minority students.

The BTF response points out that well over 27,808 students’ learning conditions and safety are impacted by the concerns raised by the 1217 teachers.
The response also points out that of the students negatively impacted by disruptive students, 80% are minority and 82% are economically disadvantaged.

“We believe that we must work together to establish a standing ‘Teaching and Learning Environment Committee’ to address the concerns raised in our study, to develop a comprehensive strategic and evolving plan to ensure that the students that need assistance and support receive that support so that all of our students have an excellent learning and safe environment. We are also disappointed that some would rather find fault with our survey rather than realize that it is a cause for concern that we must address together”, stated Phil Rumore, BTF President.
